The Ministry of Economy and Foreign Trade of the Syrian regime has issued a decree banning the export of fresh potatoes. This ban will last from the date of the decision (Thursday 15 November) until the last day of January 2019.

The Ministry did not address the reasons for it; however, the head of the Federation of Chambers of Agriculture, Mohamed Kashto, told the Syrian news agency (SANA) that the decision came against the backdrop of a poor potato production in this time of the year.

He pointed out that what is currently produced in Syria is not enough to cover the needs of the local market, and potatoes are considered a basic product that cannot be dispensed with.

The prices of potatoes have increased significantly in Syrian markets recently. In the capital markets, they can cost up to 400 pounds (0.68 Euro) per kilo.

The Syrian regime had recently been exporting potatoes to Iran under an agreement signed last May by the Syrian Trade and Labor Organization.
