Burger King SA has opened its first meat production facility in South Africa, as part of major expansion plan.

The facility, which is located Elsies River, Cape Town, was established with an investment of ZAR50m ($4.72m). It has been set up through a joint venture with Excellent Meat, a family-run meat manufacturer and distributor.

Burger King SA CEO Jaye Sinclair said that partnership was critical to support its national supply chain roll-out.

The plant will produce 700,000 hamburger patties month, and will be able to produce 3-million patties a month from 2015.

Empowerment investment company Grand Parade Investments has the Burger King master agreement for South Africa having signed the deal in 2012. Currently, there are ten outlets in South Africa and the company is planning to open 100 stores within five years.
