The overall goals of this project were (1) to implement the technical and managerial infrastructure of the EPIC-Soft methodology; (2) to test and evaluate this methodology in the preparatory and piloting phase of the survey in adolescents, adults and elderly of the EFSA-funded PILOT-PANEU project in four countries; and (3) to plan and carry out required revisions of the methodology. The final overall deliverable is expected to provide an integrated and fully operational solution on how to best implement the EPIC-Soft methodology for the EU Menu process considering the EFSA’s general principles for the collection of food consumption data.

Implementation of the EPIC-Soft methodology

The EPIC-Soft methodology was successfully implemented in five European countries (i.e. BU, FI, HU, PL, PT) and subsequently tested and evaluated in four of these countries (i.e. BU, FI, HU, PT).

Evaluation of pilot results from a methodological point of view

A series of quality indicators for the evaluation of the food consumption data from a methodological point of view were proposed by IARC and agreed upon by the PILOT-PANEU consortium. The following indicators were evaluated:

• Number/days: single foods, recipes, ingredients, ingredients/recipe
• Number/days of specific foods vs. foods not-specified (n.s.)
• Specification by facets (foods & recipes): times used; unknown vs. specific description
• Quantification method: no. of times different methods used such as standard units, household measures (HHM), etc.
• Quantification: indicated quantity vs. unknown quantity
• Overflow quantity: times reported
• Interview duration.
