The onion market is currently meandering on, says Adriaan van Belzen of Daily Onions. “Overseas export remains tricky, which means we have to sell our onions in Europe. We are dealing with a lot of lesser quality, and it is difficult to find a customer for that. Luckily, plenty of acceptable batches are still available as well, but you have to really look for them. Some demand still exists from countries such as the UK, France, Italy and eastern European countries, but sales to Scandinavia and Poland are disappointing. We are just missing the large orders.”

“The bale price, depending on quality, is between 21 and 24 cents. A price increase is not under discussion. Last week there was a small increase in price, but that was immediately suppressed. I expect we can hold out the season like this,” Van Belzen says. By now the first Egyptian onions have arrived at Daily Onion. “These look well qualitatively, and are good sizes. We came far with the Dutch red onions, so the Egyptian ones have entered an almost empty market. Additionally, the early Ramadan could have a positive impact for the Egyptian onions because supply will remain limited during Ramadan.”
