Although we are all enjoying the current spell of unseasonably mild weather, it of course comes with an effect on our fresh produce sector.

"There is a lot of cauliflower on the market just now due to the very mild weather of late, the forecast is for it to cool down a bit in the coming weeks which should influence the market," explains Cameron Gillespie from Lincolnshire Field Products.

"In general the demand is fairly slow as tends to happen when the weather is warmer, people tend to favour salads more than brassicas."

There is a lot of promotional activity going on in the supermarkets just now and although the prices are low, Cameron agrees that sometimes it is better to get something rather than nothing for the crop. There are also some imported caulis around but people will tend to go for the domestic crop if its available.

The UK cauliflower supply is currently over-wintered varieties and in a couple of months it will be into the summer crop and main volumes. "It often happens that you will have a flush of cauliflower and you have more than you need, that is when you need to look at maximising any opportunities which may come along," according to Cameron.
