It is one of the world's three largest lemon production areas, along with California in the USA and Sicily in Italy. The lemon production volume in Tongnan is abundant. Data shows that the overall surface area devoted to lemon production in Tongnan reached 20 thousand hectares in October 2017. This accounts for 84% of the overall surface area devoted to lemon production in Chongqing.
"The most popular Tongnan lemon variety in domestic and foreign markets is the Eureka lemon. That variety ripens in October and the production season lasts until December. The sales season lasts all year because of fresh lemons in cold storage." This is according to Liu Ya of Chongqing Julixin Bio-engineering Co., Ltd.
"Weather conditions in Tongnan are temperate all year round, which benefits the development of lemons. The production volume this year was similar to last year as was the price. Market demand is quite stable."
"We mainly sell our lemons to purchasing traders, who then export them to Russia, Kazakhstan, Germany, Singapore, Japan, and other countries. In the future, while we steadily develop our market share, we also hope to open up new export markets like England and the USA. We also explore new marketing channels such as e-commerce platforms."
