frozen tilapia filletsAccording to the U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), in the first four months, the tilapia imports fell by 10.8% compared to last year. The U.S. imported 73,061 tons of tilapia in the first four months of 2012, while this year over the same period imports were 64,673 tons.

Among the imported tilapia products, frozen tilapia fillets from China and Indonesia decreased by 20%. The U.S. imported 52,460 tons tilapia fillets in the first four months last year, compared to 42,110 tons this year. However, the value and quantity of fresh tilapia fillets imported from Honduras and Ecuador increased by 132.8% and 125%. Imports surged from 4,249 tons to 9,572 tons.

In the first four months, salmon imports increased over last year, with quantity increasing from 90,510 to 99,431 tons, and value of imports growing from $672 to 770 million.

Chilean salmon exports to the U.S. value increased from $ 141 million to $ 258 million, or 83%.
