summary:Average consumption of tomatoes in Poland is still three times lower than the EU average, and as a result of the Russian embargo, producers have lost an important market. But as reported by "Rzeczpospolita", there are already ideas on how to improve the s...
As stated by Mariusz Dziwulski, an economist at Bank BGZ, in an interview to "Rzeczpospolita", producers of greenhouse tomatoes, despite earlier concerns, were only slightly affected by the embargo during the first months after its introduction. The reason was the lower supply of tomatoes from Spain. After ten months of the ban by Moscow, the negative impact on Poland's tomato exports has become more visible.

One of the solutions proposed is to promote domestic consumption, since despite being one of the EU's 10 largest tomato growers, Poland's per capita consumption stands at just approximately 10 kilos per person, while the EU average exceeds 30 kilos per person.

To encourage consumption, the Association of Greenhouse Tomato and Cucumber Growers (SPPiOPO) is organising a three-year programme called "Tomatoes naturally good", which has undergone a positive verification by the Agricultural Market Agency and has been submitted to the European Commission.
