Tyson Foods (TSN) plans to launch a program that would audit the treatment of animals at livestock and poultry farms that supply it.

"We believe the farmers who supply us are the best in the world, and I think the audits will verify this," Tyson chief executive Donnie Smith says.

"But, if we find problems, we want them fixed right away." TSN works with over 12,000 independent livestock and poultry farmers.

Last week, TSN came under the media spotlight when Humane Society Chief Executive Wayne Pacelle filed paperwork in order to make a run for a seat on TSN's board. He criticized the use of gestation stalls for hogs.
