Researchers basparaguselieve that including certain vegetables such as asparagus and Jerusalem artichokes into our diets could help combat obesity and diabetes.

With rates of obesity becoming an increasingly important global issue, many research teams are looking at ways in which the problem can be tackled. A lot of effort has gone into overcoming obesity through diet in recent times. Now, researchers believe that certain foods could be the key to reducing our appetites, and therefore reducing obesity rates.

Risk

This research is being funded by Diabetes UK. The study team will be looking into how foods such as garlic, asparagus, chicory, and artichokes, affect people’s diet. These foods are all fermentable carbohydrates, which are believed to produce hormones which can reduce appetite.

Reducing appetite

Type 2 diabetes affects an estimated 2.35 million people in the UK. It is also thought that there may be half a million people who suffer from the condition, but are not aware of it. If untreated, the condition can potentially lead to fatal illnesses such as heart disease and kidney failure.

Other studies have investigated how certain foods can help reduce appetites. And the another study has suggested that simply drinking water before meals could be effective. Another recent study has suggested high protein, low calorie; meals could also help fight obesity.
