“The demand for bell peppers is rather low at the moment,” states Daniel Schury the CEO of company “Franz Schmitt” in Munich. "There is currently a low demand for peppers, other products are certainly in higher demand."

The season in Central Europe is slowly ending. “The season in the Netherlands and for instance Germany is coming to an end and the quality is slowly decreasing,” says the wholesaler, “Spain is slowly starting to pick up the pace.” Not only Spain but also Turkey supplies peppers to the wholesalers.

But still the supply isn’t too abundant, states Schury. “Spain only supplies small peppers and the quality isn’t up to the mark either,” says the expert. “But the limited supply can fulfil the low demand.”

Improvement is around the corner. “We count on the pepper market improving around the beginning of November,” explains Schury the situation.

Overall the wholesale trade prices fluctuated, just as in the recent weeks. According the BLE there is a clear trend visible (see table). The prices for the red peppers continued to rise, while those of the green peppers decreased. Particularly affected were the imported Dutch peppers. And something similar occasionally happened to the Moroccan and Turkish peppers.
