Supplies of beets coming from California have found a receptive market this year. With demand good, the market has been steady. There is increasing competition from Mexican imports, even on specialty items.

“Volumes are normal and prices are good,” said Thomas Walsh of Underwood Ranches. On November 9, prices for a carton of bunched Red type 12s were between $14.55 and $18.50. For the specialty baby beets grown by Underwood Ranches, Walsh said the price range was closer to $18.00 to $22.00 per carton.

“There are always Mexican imports,” said Walsh. “We've been doing specialty beets for a long time, and we didn't used to have competition. But now Mexico is shipping even the specialty beets.”
