Agricultural Engineers Adana Branch Board Member, Baris Kurtaran states that in Turkey, there are problems being experienced in the marketing of 70% of pomegranates, which are produced in the Mediterranean region. According to Kurtaran there are huge problems concerning the pomegranate market and the harvest of the exotic fruits is still ongoing.

Of the 400,000 tons of pomegranates produced in Turkey, 70% are grown in Mediterranean towns, concerning the 50,000-60,000 tons of harvest from Adana, Kurtaran states, “We are having some problems with marketing.” He adds that presently, Turkish farmers are just trying to catch up with the rest of the world in terms of the infrastructure for pomegranate production. “We will provide processed pomegranates for the European market.” A cooperative effort is needed to manage the market; the harvested pomegranates should be put on the market at certain periods and some should be held in cold storage.
