The weather isn't exactly summery, but strawberries are doing reasonably well in the area of price, according to Wim Meyers of Meyers Softfruit in Belgium. "There is little supply at the moment. The earliest plants from greenhouse cultivation will come into production over the next few weeks and then the supply will increase again."

Peaks up to two Euro
He believes the season has been satisfactory as far as price is concerned. "As far as Elsanta is concerned in any case. We have had prices of 1.60 to 1.80 for half a kilo with peaks up to two Euro. It's certainly an acceptable level. The news about the carriers is not so good, but then that's a completely different variety to Elsanta."

Sad price formation for brambles
The strawberry is Meyers' main product. As far as brambles, raspberries and red berries are considered the supply is mainly in the spring and the winter. "We want to be able to supply raspberries all year round with the exception of January and February. The greenhouse cultivation starts for us again next weeks." Wim has been busy with brambles for a few weeks now. "Bramble growers have had a very difficult summer. There was endless complaining about depressing price formation. As of a week or two ago brambles have made a serious leap from 1.30 to 1.40 per 125 gram tray. These are good prices."
