Premiere in the German market of orange juices: EDEKA has transferred the orange juice of its own brand GUT&GÜNSTIG to production with the Rainforest Alliance Certified TM seal. The orange juice with the small green frog logo will be available in many EDEKA markets from the end of October onward. Rainforest Alliance Certified TM stands for environment-friendly, socially and economically sustainable production. “With this, we offer our customers another juice beside EDEKA Bio Orangensaft (EDEKA organic orange juice) of which the sustainability aspect is taken into particular consideration, and accordingly certified,” says Rolf Lange, leader of company communication at EDEKA AG.

The concentrate for the GUT&GÜNSTIG orange juice with the Rainforest Alliance Certified TM seal comes from Brazil. The foundation is formed by a cooperation with small, local suppliers. In this way, development perspectives open up: by constructing a juice processing plant, 64 work places are created, a village is economically revived and the local farmers get the opportunity to sell their oranges more profitably.

All supplying farms are Rainforest Alliance-certified, work in accordance with the standards of the SAN (Sustainable Agriculture Networks), and produce their products in an ecologically, socially and economically sustainable manner. On correspondingly certified farms, conditions such as fair wages, measures for occupational safety and access to health care and educational opportunities. More sustainable cultivation methods, like SAN promotes, also benefit the environment and animal- and plant protection. Among these are, for example, giving priority to organic and mechanical pest control, using organic fertilizer, a ban of gene technology, the preservation of natural vegetation and the processing of waste water.
