Supplies of both Brazilian and Mexican limes are a lot lower than the past weeks, but interestingly enough, this doesn't result in higher prices on the market yet. "There are a lot of old limes on the market," observes Marijn Kruidenier of Mexican producer Inverafruit from Barendrecht. The price for good limes fluctuates around 6 Euro, older stock is sold for 5 Euro.

"The past four weeks, I got about five containers every week, but the coming weeks, only two containers a week, at most, will come this way. Compared to last year, a lot less is shipped to Europe. The United States is still the most important market for Mexican limes. They pay well, and only when that export decreases does Europe enter the picture," Marijn says.

Kruidenier started a sales agency in Barendrecht in May, together with a British partner and a Mexican producer of limes. "In addition to limes, we import a lot of bananas from Mexico, and this week we're starting with Portuguese Royal Gala and Golden Delicious. Soon, we'll also start with other products from Portugal, ranging from citrus to apples, sweet potatoes and bottle gourds," Marijn concludes.
