The special commodity levy on imported big onions has been increased from Rs.10 to 30 per KG with effective from today, the Finance Ministry says.

However, the ministry says that there will be no change in the market price of onions.

In a statement, the Finance Ministry said that the decision to increase the tax on imported onions was taken due to local onions crops reaching the market during the period September-October.

The statement states that the government takes such decisions constantly to safeguard the local farmer and recently the special commodity levy on imported potatoes was increased by Rs.10/- per kilo while the levy for sugar was increased by Rs.12/-.
