One of Germany's largest retailer's Rewe yesterday confirmed a new tie-up with Aral, which will see it trial a new petrol station convenience concept.

Over the course of a year, the grocery giant plans to open 10 collaborative stores with Aral in the North Rhine-Westphalia region of the country.

Under the logo "Rewe ToGo", shops will be offering up to 1200 items, including products such as sandwiches, salads or cut fruit, but also pasta, rice, spices, oil and sugar.


The first of the planned stores is to be integrated on 3 April in Dusseldorf, and more will follow with openings in the cities of Bochum and Cologne.

"We are seeing that change the customer needs. Therefore, we provide consumers with the test sites - in addition to our quality fuels and car wash - an even more attractive offer high-quality, fresh foods available," Aral's head of strategic cooperation Rainer Kraus said in a statement.

Aral currently has around 2,500 gas stations in germany, and has belonged to BP since 2002.
