Honduras continues to strengthen citrus exports as the Citrus Growers Association of Sonaguera Colon…Honduras continues to strengthen citrus exports as the Citrus Growers Association of Sonaguera Colon (Acison) will ship its first two containers with pineapple orange to the European islands of Martinique and Aruba.
The orange being exported meets phytosanitary requirements and is free of the Mediterranean fly thanks to the support of the authorities of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG), through the National Agricultural Health Service (SENASA), said Rafael Salazar, the regional coordinator in Columbus.
Acison citrus producers will ship the first 2 containers this Saturday and they expect to ship three to four more containers to the European islands next week, said Carlos Morazan, orange producer and member of ACISON in the area.
"We have been supporting the producers of Acison so they register their plants at Senasa so that the entire phytosanitary process is in order," added Salazar.
Acison currently has 31 associate producers. The association contributes to create jobs in the area and revenues for the country.
Orange production is the most important means of livelihood for the population of the municipality of Sonaguera and some villages of Trujillo. This municipality concentrates most of the citrus production in the region of Aguan.
