Veracruz produces 48% of Mexico's citrus
The President of the Citrus State Council of the State of Veracruz, Juan Antonio Soberon Ferrer, sai…The President of the Citrus State Council of the State of Veracruz, Juan Antonio Soberon Ferrer, said that, even though there still are some pests in the citrus trees, Veracruz continues to lead the national production of these fruits.
He said the entity produces 48 percent of the citrus fruits produced in Mexico and that, even though they are being affected by the Huanglongbing, which affects orange trees, they were working in nutritional matters to prevent the trees from getting sick.
"We produce 48 percent of the domestic production, 70 percent of Mexico's Persian lime, and 40 percent of the country's orange production. We are the main producers in the country. Veracruz' citrus sector generates more than 800 million dollars in exports. The country makes more than 14,000 million pesos in the field, thus covering production costs," he said.
Soberon Ferrer said that the Huanglongbing disease affected citrus production worldwide and that producers had learned to live with it because there was no cure for it.
This pest produces deformations in the tree sprouts, abnormal coloring in fruits and decreases the citrus production.
