Malta farming is gaining popularity in Gaibandha, Rajshahi in Bangladesh. The Malta growers of Sadullapur Upazila in the district have already completed harvest of the citrus fruit this season. This all comes from a successful plan to increase Malta cultivation in the region.

A pragmatic plan was taken to introduce the cultivation of Malta, one of the high value crops, in 2013 to meet the nutrition demand and help the farmers earn profit. Accordingly, the sub-assistant agriculture officers and the officials of the Upazila agriculture office, insisted farmers to grow the fruit on their land to attain the cherished goal.

In response, a total of 32 farmers of different villages including Baradaudpur, Tarafbazit, Edilpur, Chhaigari, Dhaperhat and Ghegarbazar of the Upazila planted the saplings of Malta in 2013. In total, 150 bighas in the district are being transformed into malta orchards.
