Recently, Zhanjiang Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau in Guangdong province released its new seafood export statistics that Zhanjiang exported a total of 74, 400 tonnes of aquatic products overseas, worth 457, 000, 000 US Dollars. Export quantity was almost same as last year’s. Export weight increased by 4.4% but value of export dropped by 3.5% year on year. The export situation was not optimistic.

It’s known that Chinese domestic raw shrimp price and labor cost had kept high since the beginning of 2016, caused by global economic recession. EU, America, Japan, South Korea and so on all set up technological trading measures against drugs residue in aquatic products and continuously improved their import thresholds; overseas market continued to shrink, orders and import price continuously to go down; large-scale environment of aquaculture also underwent changes; poor and non-ideal shrimp harvest causing supply shortage of raw shrimp.

Besides, aquaculture technology in surrounding countries gradually becoming mature and production cost was relatively cheap, imposing high impact upon Chinese similar aquatic enterprises and triggering fierce competition in international market. As a result, aquatic product export in Zhanjiang has been suffering severe situation.

Facing grim and complex overseas trading situation of aquatic products, local inspection and quarantine bureau informed local enterprises that they should seize international strategy opportunity of One Belt and One Road, exploring new markets and strengthening seafood quality management and supervision to meet high quality requirements in different markets.
