The Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) in Malaysia believes that the new market access to China for two categories of durian will prevent the dumping of the seasonal fruit this Ramadan.

Fama Director General Datuk Ahmad Ishak said the authority has opened up two new market segments that allow Fama to export two categories of durian to China. “One of them is frozen durian pips, taken from high-value durian like the Musang King variety.

“We received the approval last year from the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of the People’s Republic of China or AQSIQ.

“AQSIQ will come here to inspect our plantations before the frozen durian pips can be exported,” Ahmad said.

As for the second category, which is processed durian flesh, Ahmad said it is also in high demand in China as it can be used to make durian-flavoured products like pancakes, mooncakes, and crisp rolls.

“This bilateral relationship between our countries will definitely go far in ensuring that the dumping of durian fruits will not happen during Ramadan this year,” he told a press conference after launching the Agro-Based Industry and Floriculture Carnival at the Gopeng Rural Transformation Centre on Saturday 28 May.
