Fresh fruit imports grew by 28% in volume and 26% in value in the first half of this year compared with the same period of 2015, totalling 816,837 tonnes worth 816 million Euro, according to the Department of Customs and Excise of the Ministry of Economy, processed by FEPEX.

The growth of imports applies to virtually all products, with the most noteworthy increases being those of bananas, with 148,188 tonnes (+31%), apples, with 127,926 tonnes (+23%), watermelons, 50,370 tonnes (+23%), avocados, with 48,343 tonnes (+88%), pears, with 39,821 tonnes (+39%) or lemons, with 19,502 tonnes (+258%).

The main importing regions in order of importance were Catalonia, Andalusia, Madrid and the Region of Valencia.
