India revises regulations on labelling of blended vegetable oils

According to the Food Safety Standards Agency of India (FSSAI), the Food Safety Standards Agency of India (FSSAI) recently issued the Food Safety Standards (Packaging and Labelling) Regulation 2018, the first amendment -amendment of mixed vegetable oil labels.

It is understood that the regulations come into force on the day they are published in the official gazette. Food operators should comply with all the provisions of the regulations before July 1, 2019.

Some of the original reports are as follows:

1. (1) These regulations may be called the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labelling) First Amendment Regulations, 2018.            
           (2) They shall come into force on the date of their publication in the Official Gazette and Food Business Operator shall comply with all the provisions of these regulations by 1st July, 2019.

2. In the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labelling) Regulations, 2011, in Chapter 2,-
(1) in regulation 2.3 relating to “Manner of declaration”, in sub-regulation 2.3.3, for second proviso, the following shall be substituted, namely:-“Provided further that in case of label declarations required under clause (5), (6), (7), (8) and (10) of sub-regulation 2.4.2, and sub-regulation 2.4.4 except in case of declaration specifying instructions for use or preparation of the product, the size of numeral and letters shall not be less than 3mm.”;
(2) in regulation 2.4 relating to “Specific Requirements/Restrictions on manner of Labelling”, in sub-regulation 2.4.2, for clause 11, the following shall be substituted, namely:- “11. Every package containing an admixture of edible oils shall carry the following label declaration immediately below its brand name/trade name on front of pack, namely:-The font size of the label declaration ”Blended Edible Vegetable Oil“ shall not be less than 5 mm and for label declaration ”Name and nature of edible vegetable oil……% by weight“, font size shall not be less than 3mm: Provided that the font size of the label declaration ”Blended Edible Vegetable Oil“ shall not be less than 10mm in case the net quantity of the edible oil contained in the packages is 5 litre and above.
