As part of a foodborne illness outbreak investigation, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has issued several recall warnings for chia seed products due to possible contamination with Salmonella. The Agency continues to identify secondary products that may have used recalled chia seeds as an ingredient. Through this part of the investigation, additional recalls are likely.

The Agency continues to work closely with the Public Health Agency of Canada, Health Canada, and provincial authorities. As well, we are working with international partners, including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to identify any affected products that may have been exported and distributed internationally.

The Agency is also confirming that recalled products have been removed from store shelves. All of the effectiveness checks performed to date show the recalled products have been removed from the marketplace. This work will continue as new products are recalled.

The CFIA will continue to update the public as additional affected products are identified and recalled from the marketplace.
