The delegate of the Government of Spain in the Canary Islands, Elena Máñez, has announced that the banana sector should receive the promised transport aid before the end of this year.

After meeting with the Managing Board of the Association of Canary Banana Producers (Asprocan), Máñez said that "we are working hard to help the sector complete all the necessary procedures."

She recalled that 10 million Euro have been allocated for transport aid to Canary bananas in the framework of the General State Budget, and said that another technical meeting would be held this week to continue moving forward.

During her first official visit to the island of La Palma, she also met with representatives of the avocado and banana sector, accompanied by the insular director of the General State Administration in La Palma, Ana María de León, and by the insular Councillor of Agriculture, Livestock and Fishing, José Basilio Pérez.

Ahead of the start of the new season, and given the problems of the previous one and those observed recently in other islands, the Government Delegate has raised a call for all instances of fruit theft to be reported.

Máñez also said that "avocado producers of La Palma have agreed that they should join forces to guarantee the quality control of their production. Everyone agrees progress must be made towards the establishment of a quality seal for the avocados produced in the Canary Islands."

Máñez has encouraged associations and companies to "set goals together, in an effort that will have the support of the Government.
