A Taiwanese delegation’s visit  to a recent international food and beverage expo in Japan took home orders worth billions of Taiwan dollars. The group was led by led by the Council of Agriculture (COA) Minister Chen Chi-Chung. He witnessed the signing of two trade deals between Taiwanese and Japanese companies.

One of the documents was a contract for Wismettac Group of Japan to purchase 9,000 tons of bananas from Taiwan over a three year period worth NT$430 million (US$13.85 million).

The second deal was a memorandum of understanding between Taiwanese company Mitagri and Japan's Funasho Shoji Group which aims to increase exports of bananas to Japan from 600 tons to 1,000 tons.

The name Mitagri comes from MIT (Made in Taiwan) and AGRI (agriculture), Chen explained, adding that the company's mission is to develop more export channels for Taiwan's agricultural products.

COA Department of International Affairs Deputy Director-General Lin Chia-jung said the fact Taiwan farm products received so many orders in Japan demonstrates that good quality Taiwan farm produce is much-loved by international consumers.
