Barry Callebaut has outlined its plans for Fi Europe (Frankfurt, 19-21 November) 2013.

The company plans to discuss with visitors the health claim recently approved for ACTICOA cocoa and chocolate. The European Commission approved Barry Callebaut's health claim submission for the cocoa flavanols that are preserved in the chocolate products of the ACTICOA range, and the company now has a proprietary right to use the cocoa flavanols claim – that "cocoa flavanols help maintain the elasticity of blood vessels, which contributes to normal blood flow" - within EU countries.

Barry Callebaut notes that, in conventional chocolate production, the flavanols are lost during the fermentation stage – but the company’s research team discovered a way to preserve up to 80% of the flavanols in ACTICOA chocolate. It was able to provide evidence that the daily intake of 200 mg of cocoa flavanols (provided by 2.5g of ACTICOA cocoa powder or 10g of ACTICOA dark chocolate) had the claimed beneficial effect. This health claim is the first in the cocoa and chocolate industry.

Another topic of discussion in Frankfurt, against a background of growing consumer interest in, and preference for, foods based on sustainable and ethical business practices is the Barry Callebaut Cocoa Horizons projects, the further expansion of the company’s Quality Partner Program (QPP) and the latest developments regarding its Cocoa Horizons Truck.

Highlighted on the Barry Callebaut stand will be the COCOART Collection, a new range of E-number free cocoa decorations, along with the company’s Bensdorp cocoa range which has undergone a complete restyling.

And also, the company says it will be featuring nibs - roasted, broken cocoa kernels, with Barry Callebaut asking “how much closer can you get to the basics?”
