Neptune has been granted a patent by the Australian Patent Office covering omega-3 phospholipids comprising polyunsaturated fatty acids, one of the main bioactive ingredients in all recognized krill oils. The patent is granted for the Australian market and is valid until 2022.

The patent covers, regardless of the extraction process, novel omega-3 fatty acid phospholipid compositions suitable for human consumption, synthetic and/or natural, including compositions extracted from marine and aquatic biomasses. The company said that it protects Neptune's krill oils, namely NKO, and also covers amongst others, oils and powders extracted from krill, containing marine phospholipids bonded to EPA and/or DHA, distributed and/or sold in the Australian market.

"Today's announcement further solidifies our worldwide patent estate and exemplifies the strength, value and validity of our intellectual property," said André Godin, interim president and chief executive officer of Neptune. "We are committed to building and defending this important asset and we have been very successful to date."
