China will extend anti-dumping duties on potato starch imported from the European Union for five more years from Feb. 6 to protect local enterprises, the Ministry of Commerce said Tuesday.

The range and rates of the duties will be determined based on the ministry's previous decisions in 2007 and 2011, the ministry said in a statement on its website, without elaborating.

In 2007, China announced that it would impose anti-dumping duties of 18%-35% on potato starch from the EU but revised the rates to 12.6%-56.7% in 2011, according to the ministry.

If the duties had been allowed to lapse, potato starch imported from the EU could damage the interests of the domestic potato starch industry, the ministry said in the statement.

Potato starch is used in food, pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, textiles and papermaking.
