With all the preservatives people are already warned about when it comes to their fruits and vegetables, it won’t be in the least surprising if the population is wary about the banana spray-on coating that has recently been developed.

A healthy dose of scepticism should be used when it comes to the food industry. Nevertheless, the banana spray-on coating provides a great service that is safe for consumers, especially since it is used to coat the peel, which most people don’t eat.

Essentially, the banana spray-on coating delays the ripening of the fruit. Created by scientists from the Tianjin University of Science and Technology in China, is comprised of a type of hydrogel that can keep the fruit fresh for nearly two weeks. Dr. Xihong Li, the lead scientist, presented it at the 244th National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society in Philadelphia.
