In detail, at the April 17th Meeting of the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health - Section on Toxicological Safety of the Food Chain, the EU Member States considered a proposal to amend Annex III of the Additive Regulation 1333/2008 in regards to the use of sucrose esters of fatty acids (E 473) in flavorings for clear water based flavored drinks. Following discussions, a qualified majority adopted the proposal and the regulation will now be formally changed, though there is no firm date as to when the amendment will be published.

This approval opens up the huge EU market, which is already using P90 for color emulsions. Being tasteless and odorless, this new and unique solubilization tool enables flavorists to solubilize natural and authentic tasting flavor oils into clear beverages. This approval also allows global companies to cover a wide range of geography with one formulation.

Bob Comstock, Managing Director for Compass Foods, stated, “Our new P90 emulsifier combined with the SoluClear process creates clear beverages with more authentic and stable citrus tastes. With the natural trend continuing to gain momentum in Europe, this approval enables flavor companies to address consumer demands for healthier and more natural tasting beverages. Our technical team rapidly assists customers to launch flavors that create more authentic tasting and stable clear beverages.”

Compass Foods developed a patented process for P90 production ten years ago and now operates a “state of the art” 200 ton / year production plant in Singapore. Utilizing this new emulsifier, the company developed SoluClear, a process and formulation that enables oil soluble materials to be incorporated into clear beverages.
