One year after the company launched a major wind farm in Mexico, Grupo Bimbo S.A.B. de C.V. on July 18 dedicated a new “Ecologic Depot,” a distribution center featuring six dozen electrically powered vehicles.

Designed by Bimbo technicians, the depot’s fleet will be powered by wind-derived electricity.

“The new Ecologic Depot will meet the company’s distribution needs in the downtown area of Mexico City,” said Javier Gonzalez Franco, president of Bimbo S.A. “The fleet is comprised by 73 electric vehicles with an engine technology developed, for the first time, by technicians from the bakery company.”

The company’s wind farm initiative had made the green distribution center possible “closing the operations sustainable cycle,” said Daniel Servitje, chairman and chief executive officer, Grupo Bimbo.

“Less than a year ago we inaugurated the Piedra Larga Wind Farm, and today we are using that renewable energy source to power the operation of emission-free vehicles, collaborating with the mobility in the this very important area of our city,” Mr. Servitje said.

The depot will feature rainfall collection systems, complete water recycling for vehicle washing, as well as a wind turbine, green walls, solar cells and efficient lighting mechanisms, Bimbo said. The project is expected to cost close to 20 million pesos ($1.6 million).
