US-based GEA Farm Technologies's global license for liquid photopurification company SurePure’s ultraviolet (UV) calf milk purifier technology has been renewed till 2018.

GEA Farm Technologies, which is a part of GEA Group, markets SurePure's technology for feeding dairy calves under the brand name UV Pure via its subsidiaries in over 60 countries.

An alternative option to on-farm pasteurization, the technology ensures nutrient-rich and hygienic milk. In the last four years, GEA Farm Technologies has sold over 140 systems for on-farm use, mainly in North America. It has now accelerated its plans to launch the technology into new markets.

SurePure's system makes use of the anti-bacterial effects of UV light in order to get high milk quality in the first few weeks of a calf's life. The UV light inactivates the bacteria contained in the milk, by impacting their DNA and eliminating their ability to reproduce. Fewer pathogens reduces the risk of illness, claimed SurePure.

Moreover, the system requires up to 92% less energy than traditional calf milk pasteurizers, when processing the same amount of waste milk.

SurePure vice president of sales and marketing Steve Miller said that since appointing GEA four years ago as SurePure's global distributor for calf milk, there has been a great uptake of the technology for the use in calf's milk globally.

"We have had major sales in the US and China. The technology has also been launched in Europe and we look forward to sales accelerating," Miller added.
