The plant-protein industry continues to expand as construction of the first commercial-scale plant to produce pea protein, Peazazz™, is underway in Winnipeg, Manitoba, reported Burcon NutraScience Corp. Engineering of the semi-works production plant began in the summer of 2012.

Burcon expects to have the facility completed and operational by mid-year with the pea protein available to customers purchasing commercial-scale market development quantities in July of this year.

Peazazz is created through a proprietary patent-pending process, delivering a product with greater than 90% protein concentration on a moisture-free basis.

The extraction technology produces a pea protein with complete solubility and transparency in beverages with a pH lower then 4.0. Burcon's pea protein extraction technology is supported by demand for protein ingredients and the increasing cost of competitive proteins.
