Swiss agrochemicals company Syngenta has announced that it has received European Union (EU) approval for isopyrazam - a next generation fungicide. This move which is expected to help cereal farmers control fungal diseases and achieve higher crop yields.

Isopyrazam's advanced double-binding technology ensures strong adhesion to fungus and to leaf wax, providing long-lasting and durable disease protection, according to Syngenta.

Syngenta noted that under the EU's provisional approval system, British and Irish cereal farmers have experienced the benefits of isopyrazam for the past two growing seasons. These growers have achieved better disease control, which has helped deliver higher crop yields. The fungicide is marketed as Seguris in wheat and Bontima in barley.

The company plans to register a range of products containing isopyrazam in major EU markets for use on cereals and others crops such as oilseed rape, vegetables and pome fruits.

Syngenta chief operating officer John Atkin said that this approval means growers across the EU can now benefit from this important addition to the company's portfolio.
