India has amended a regulation, which makes it mandatory for FMCG firms to sell products such as biscuits and milk powder in standard sizes. The new regulation will go into effect beginning 1 November 2012.

This move comes after the government received several complaints about the reduction in the quantity of packaged products without a change in pricing.

Food and Consumer Affairs Minister K V Thomas was quoted by the Economic Times as saying that it has been observed that some companies are lowering the quantity of packaged products by small fractions, without making a change in the price.

"The government after due examination of the issue amended the Legal Metrology Rules, 2011," Thomas added.

The new regulation will be applicable for 19 commodities including baby food, biscuits, weaning food, bread, butter, tea, coffee, cereals, pulses, milk powder, salt, edible oils, rice and wheat flour, aerated soft drink, drinking water, cement and paints.
