US meat company Sanderson Farms plans to establish a new chicken processing plant in Nash County, North Carolina, US. The plant would process about 50 million chickens annually, and create 1,100 jobs.

Sanderson Farms chairman and CEO Joe F. Sanderson Jr said the company has bought land on NC 97 to serve as a hatchery and has options to purchase property for a wastewater treatment facility.

Nash County owns the 142-acre tract, which will be used for the processing plant. The company, however, has noted that it has not made a decision on when to begin the work on the plant.

Meanwhile, the city of Wilson has been opposing the project stating that the construction of chicken houses could negatively affect the environment.

Sanderson Farms is a leading chicken processor in the US, with operations in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Georgia.
