New, Revised OIE Standards Adopted at 80th General Session

The only pathway for adoption of a standard is via approval of the World Assembly of Delegates at the General Session in May each year.
Significant updates achieved at the 80th General Session in 2012 include, among others, the adoption of the following standards that will affect aquatic veterinary issues:
Aquatic Animal Health Code
- Communication (New Chapter 3.2.)
- Monitoring of the quantities and usage patterns of antimicrobial agents used in aquatic animals (New Chapter 6.4.)
- Development and harmonisation of national antimicrobial resistance surveillance and monitoring programmes for aquatic animals (New Chapter 6.5.)
- Killing of farmed fish for disease control purposes (New Chapter 7.4.)
OIE recommendations on the Competencies of graduating veterinarians (“Day 1 graduates”) to assure National Veterinary Services of quality.
