Bernstein ReseMarket Basket arch has opined that though Demoulas Market Basket has received interest from a dozen potential buyers, it would not be a wise acquisition for Ahold.

Though Ahold has been approached regarding its interest in a takeover, it has not necessarily expressed any interest, according to reports.

Market Basket's market price was quoted at $3.5 billion. Bernstein Research has said that a deal would be "too big, too expensive and has too many complications." Rather, it would be more advantageous for Ahold to simply buy a selection of stores, particularly in Boston, the investment analysis group has stated.

Bernstein went on to say "The sale of Market Basket suggests price investment was not the action of a long term sustainable competitor but more a sign of short term desperation. It forces Ahold to improve its operations and stay competitive. It reinforces our positive view. OP €17.50."
