During last week’s PMA Fresh Connections Southern Africa, Joburg market, was presented to the audience attending Woman’s Fresh Perspectives Breakfast, they also sponsored the breakfast. This market has been around for more than 120 years, and according to its CEO, Simangele Sekgobela, “we are still fresh, and the people who make us fresh are the farmers who bring the tomatoes, the avocados, the onions, potatoes, bananas, etc. Growers play a big role in us being successful.“

Joburg market is the largest fresh produce market in the African continent; some even argue that it is the world’s largest in terms of volume, but it still needs its growers in order to remain relevant. “One may ask why the farmers who have been using our market for generations are still doing so, and this is due to the products and services that we offer,” affirms Simangele.

The market plays a huge role in the economy, as it decides what products go in the shelves. “We are coming up with a project called ‘the market of the future’, which is meant to make sure that we comply with the food standards and that the cold chain is never broken. Additionally, we are opening up opportunities for our women in an effort to transform the market,” explains the CEO.

Over one million products are handled at Joburg market and efforts are constantly made to ensure the availability of most fruits and vegetables throughout the year. “Our role in ensuring food security is very important, because everyone has to eat; food will always remain relevant. This is why we wish to continue strengthening our partnerships with producers and companies,” concludes Simangele Sekgobela.
