Just one montAuchanh after Carrefour pulled out of its Indian operation, Auchan has followed suit.

Auchan and its Indian partner Max Hypermarkets signed a deal only two years ago which they hoped would "create a joint venture that would allow Auchan to invest in India with full compliance to Indian law."

The French retailer said in a statement this week that "in spite of their best efforts, the two parties could not complete the project." The 12 Max Hypermarkets which bore the Auchan emblem will no longer do so by January next year.

The end of this particular partnership represents another illustration of the extreme difficulties which must be surmounted before succeeding in the Indian food retail industry.

Max Hypermarkets is part of Dubai's Landmark Group.
