The South Bay's edgy purveyor of fried dough -- Psycho Donuts -- will celebrate National Doughnut Day on Friday, June 7, with doughnut balls filled with foie gras mousse.

Yes, foie gras. They can get around the California state ban on fattened duck and goose livers because they will not be selling these savory doughnuts, dubbed the Foie Bomb. They'll be giving them away, while supplies last, at their Campbell and San Jose locations.

And as if risking protests by animal rights activists weren't enough, Psycho Donuts also will flirt with danger by offering these goodies with a pointed "pipette" of fig, honey and balsamic vinegar gastrique meant to be injected into the doughnut while it is being consumed. (Eaters,consider yourselves warned.) A fried sage leaf will top each doughnut.

The Foie Bomb is a joint brainstorm between Psycho Donuts and former Google chef Charlie Ayers of Calafia in Palo Alto.

"We're proving that donuts are a truly versatile culinary delight," Ron Levi, "doctor of donut derangement" at Psycho, said in statement issued Monday. "We are always pushing the boundaries of where donuts have gone in the past, and leading the zaniest path forward in the donut industry."
