Fruit and vegetables prices in Ukraine have decreased for the fourth week in a row, reports fruit-inform.com. According to the site, the Ukrainian fresh produce price index decreased by 4.6% in the week from February 27th to March 4th. Over 4 weeks the price index has gone down by 14.3%.

''Low internal market demand and the earlier start of spring field works forced growers to reduce their produce prices,'' says Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. ''In addition, the market was under the influence of the larger percentage of losses during storage; therefore, many sellers of traditional vegetables had to cut their prices to stimulate sales.''

Traditional vegetables became 4.7% less expensive last week, and potato prices went down by 9.1%. The most significant decrease in prices of traditional vegetables was registered in the onion segment (-7.7% week-on-week), and white cabbage prices also went down.

Low demand also exerted pressure on the prices of greenhouse vegetables, and tomatoes became 20% less expensive. Such a decrease in tomato prices was not compensated by a slight increase in cucumber ones, registered thanks to relatively high export demand.

Fruit prices were stable in the majority of cases thanks to stability in the Ukrainian hryvnia exchange rates.
