The first British asparagus were harvested way back at the beginning of January, but by the middle of the month the weather cooled a bit and growth slowed."We have had growth all the way through but cooler weather in February has stopped it turning into a very early year," explained Chris Chinn from Cobrey Farms. "We normally wouldn't expect to have asparagus until mid March so it's all a bonus at the moment."
The asparagus is retailing in Marks&Spencer at £3 for 100g tips.
This early production will however affect the volumes later on, whatever volume is harvest now won't be there later on.
The main volumes are expected mid to late April as normal, "Unless we get a warm spell, the crop is ready to come but needs some warmth," according to Chris.
Demand increases for Easter but British asparagus season is normally not up to speed by then.
