Health officials in the United States have revealed that food eaten from a snack menu for children resulted in 24 people becoming sick.

The people became sick from an outbreak of E. coli infection linked to the frozen snack foods, which are strongly marketed to children.

Eight people, mostly young children or teenagers, were hospitalised after contracting the disease, which can be fatal. Health investigators said they had detected E. coli in an open package of frozen chicken quesadillas, which were tested at the home of one of those taken ill.

On Friday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported illnesses in Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Mississippi, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.

Quesadillas, mozzarella bites and other frozen products made in November were immediately recalled.
