India bans imports of fungal infested Chinese garlic

India had imposed unilateral ban on import of fungal disease infested Chinese garlic as the latter is largest producers in the world.

This was stated by Union Commerce Minister Nirmala Sitaraman while replying to a supplementary query raised by Shimla MP Virender Kashayap in Parliament yesterday, a press release issued by Mr Kashayap informed.

The Minister informed that imported garlic was investigated for the disease.

Mr Kashyap seeking ban on its import said that India is second largest producer in the world as after 15 LT production in China India produce 10 LT garlic.

Ms Sitaraman said that garlic was imported from Nepal, Pakistan and Bangladesh. However, Mr Kashayap also demanded ban on this import as it was against the interest of farmers of Himachal Pradesh as most of crop is being produced here.

BJP MP informed the centre that a letter have also been sent to minister to draw her attention toward this issue. The Minister assured the house that keeping the gravity of situation the action would be taken according the wish of public representatives.

The farmers belonged to district Sirmaur, Solan, Kullu and Shimla engaged in its production in the state.
